Happy New Year!
Low cost airlines are seemingly become popular among the East African skies and with the New Year; we can strongly say that travellers will now have more options of air carries across the region.
Today, private charter airline Fly-Sax will launch flights to Uganda, flying twice daily to Entebbe from Nairobi and Mombasa.
Don Smith, CEO & founder of Fly-SAX, said in a statement Thursday that they would be launching the new route to meet the ever increasing demand for low-cost, efficient and safe air travel between Uganda and Kenya, having that Uganda formed part of our multi-hub strategy operating out of Nairobi and Mombasa, serving major cities in East Africa as well as the popular beach and safari destinations within Kenya.
Earlier, Kenya’s Civil Aviation Authority is said to have granted Jambojet an initial one year license to fly from Nairobi into the wider Eastern African region. Sources claim that besides Entebbe, Jambojet are also set to fly to Juba, Kigali, Bujumbura and Addis Ababa. However rights to fly to Tanzanian destinations like Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, while granted by the Kenyan CAA, will be harder to take on following the blocking of Fastjet’s denied application to fly into Nairobi from Dar es Salaam and as a repercussion, chances are we may see the Tanzanian CAA take up the opportunity to reciprocate the blocking of one of their own - Fastjet.
RwandAir had also announced that they too would start flying the Entebbe – Nairobi route, set to start from 10th January, 2015, however news reaching us as of now is that the Kenyan CAA have suspended the licence! RwandAir is seemingly becoming Uganda’s ‘adopted’ airline after the demise of Air Uganda and hopefully on a future date, if there is a change of mind... . the route would be most welcome by travellers especially those who are loyal RwandAir passengers!
It is thefore right to say that since it is only the begining of the year and we can see the East African sky route opening up....we can only imagine what the future will look like!
