Kenya - Lake Turkana and Chalbi Desert.
Northern Kenya has always carried a mystique of the remote and unexplored. To travel there is still an expedition where we need to be fully independant for food, water and feul. Meeting with different tribes peoples and spectacular landscapes will leave you with the wildest memories. There ahs been little developement in the "forgotten" land in the past years and the peoples live still in a traditional manner. The arid beauty of the giant Lake Turkana spreading out in the desert landscape will impress you. The game viewing in Samburu reserve will give you the chance to see all of the big game. Safari Highlights - Lake Bogoria flamingoes and geysers - Semi desert landscape of Northern Kenya - Lake Turkana, Africa’s Jade Sea - Chalbi Desert and Gabbra Camel Caravans - Ndoto and Matthews Mountain ranges - Samburu Game Reserve with its unique wildlife
-
Descending into the Rift Valley we visit Lake Bogoria Game Reserve where geysers shoot hot steam high into the air and flocks of flamingos feed on algae in the warm waters.
-
On a small track we drive toward the northern desert region and up onto the high plateau of Maralal. Visit the colourful town where the Samburu people come to purchase their wares.
-
Towering 2000m above us Mount Nyiru dominates the Rift Valley. South Horr is the heart of Samburu country and the people live still in a traditional manner.
-
Continuing northwards through a lava beaconed desert where the horizon shimmers in the heat, the great `Jade Sea', Lake Turkana, finally appears through the haze. At El Molo Bay lives a small community of fishermen who are descendants of the most ancient civilisation in Kenya. Their housing and lifestyle has remained unchanged, and even if hunting hippos and crocodiles is now against the law, Nile Perch are still abundant and is their main diet.
-
Heading east over outcrops of lava rock we enter a land populated by the Borana & Gabbra tribes. The Chalbi desert is a white salt pan totally surrounded by extinct volcanoes and ancient lava flows. Many wells are dug into the rock and sand, where Rendille & Samburu water their animals whilst singing and chanting their prayers to the rhythm of their labour.
-
Once again in Samburu country we follow a rugged track which skirts the Ndoto mountains. This small chain of sheltered mountains is far off the beaten track and has unique flora and fauna.
-
We pass small villages & observe a culture in it’s unspoilt state. Few tourists frequent this area despite its beauty and peacefulness, and where each meeting with the inhabitants is an honourable occasion.
-
Animal life is varied and prolific, with elephants, oryx, lions, buffaloes, as well as Grevy’s zebra & gerenuks which are unique to this area. The banks of the Uaso Nyiro river are an excellent observation point for animals and birds. Game viewing in the reserve.
-
After a last early game drive we pack for our return to Nairobi & the busy hassle of city. We pass through the cultivated foothills of Mt. Kenya, past plantations of tea, coffee, and pineapples, forested slopes and views of Mt. Kenya's glaciers.
