Nairobi
Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and the largest city in East Africa. It began as a depot of the East African Railroad in 1899 and in barely a century has become a major city and headquarters of the United Nations. Nairobi has many hotels ranging from first class international hotels through to cheap motels, many excellent restaurants offering lots of different cuisines, casinos, nightclubs, cinemas and a couple of theatres. Many souvenir shops line the streets and the city market is vibrant and colourful.
There are at least 10 golf courses around the city and a number of cricket and rugby grounds. The Kenya National Museum in Nairobi is worth a visit with its outstanding displays of early man, Kenya fuana, tribal cultures and nearby snake park. Near the Railway Station stands the Railway Museum with its exhibition of old steam engines and remains of the old railway which became known at the time of its building as the 'lunatic line', built to give access to Uganda from the coast.
The Nairobi National Park is not far from the city centre and offers possibly the best chance of seeing rhino in Kenya. The Giraffe Centre in the suburb of Langata gives visitors the opportunity to literally see eye to eye with the giraffe and feed them by hand. Other attractions include the Karen Blixen Museum in the suburb of Karen, which has attracted many visitors since 'Out of Africa'. For a cultural experience, the Bomas of Kenya in Langata puts on shows of tribal dancing and displays of traditional Kenyan homesteads.
