Gorillas
Schedule:

  • Entebbe Lake Victoria Hotel Ngamba Chimpanzee sanctuary, half day tour by boat
  • Travel from Entebbe along mountain roads to BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST gorilla sanctuary. Overnight in en suite chalet/lodge accommodation. It is a long days drive but the scenery is beautiful, the last section travelling on mountain roads to reach the camp around 5pm. Overnight Buhoma Guest Lodge. This lodge is located on the edge of the sanctuary, on the slope of the hill. Accommodation is in thatched chalets with ensuite bathrooms. Meals are taken in a dining area. Your permits will be pre-booked for trekking the following day. (Option to upgrade accommodation on request, additional cost)
  • Gorilla trekking Buhoma Guest Lodge An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes, led by experienced trackers will bring you amongst a family of Mountain Gorillas. These massive primates are extremely rare, only 600 odd remaining. You will get within metres of the family, and be privileged to spend time amongst them. Returning to the camp you will be able to reflect on the experience. Balance of day at leisure, you may organise a forest walk looking for primates and birds in the forest. This would be an additional amount and payable direct to the parks. The trekking may be fairly strenuous; anything from one hour up to six hours or more is not uncommon at relatively high altitude. Please refer to our information sheet.
  • Option of second trek or forest walk. The gorilla trekking permit MUST be pre-booked to avoid disappointment. There are two gorilla familes in the area and where possible its good to be able to trek both. After your second trek you will travel to Kisoro on the border of Rwanda. Overnight at the Travellers Rest hotel, made famous by Dian Fossey.
  • This morning we will cross into Rwanda (the border formalities are generally done the evening before) An early morning trek into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes in Rwandas Parc National Des Volcans, where Dian Fossey did her ground-breaking research in the 1970s and 80s. Returning to the lodge, we have an opportunity to relax. Overnight Gorilla Nest Lodge.
  • Second opportunity for gorilla trekking. In Rwanda there are 30 permits available (four families) for trekking per day. After the trek, we return to Kabale, overnight at the White Horse Inn, or to Lake Bunyoni, Bushara Island tented camp.
  • Return to Entebbe, overnight Lake Victoria Hotel Note: Guests may have the option of flying OUT of Kigali today on a scheduled flight to Entebbe or elsewhere, rather than driving. A further option would be to overnight at NGAMBA ISLAND CHIMPANZEE SANCTUARY, on Lake Victoria. See below for further details, this would be an additional cost.
