Camping Safaris
Porini Adventure Camping
Accommodation is in small 2-man dome tents. It is “real camping” and all guests who book the Mobile Adventure 4x4 Safari need to bring their own sleeping bag as well as a towel. All meals are prepared by the camp cook. Mineral water is provided in camp and on game drives but guests need to buy their own drinks at a supermarket en route to each camp.
The big attraction is being in small campsites in exclusive wildlife conservancies with activity-packed itineraries and excellent guides and with game drives in open-sided 4x4 safari vehicles, not vans. This camping safari has been designed to offer the same high quality wildlife safari experience provided by the top-end safari camps, with 4x4 game viewing escorted by top class guides and in exclusive wildlife conservancies away from the tourist minibuses, but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic mobile camps, “real camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the expensive up-market tented lodges.
For those for whom the wildlife safari experience is more important than the accommodation, and who are prepared to sleep in small tents in sleeping bags on a mattress on the floor with an element of “roughing it”, this gives an opportunity for an exceptional and exclusive wildlife experience with high quality guiding but at a fraction of the price. The Gamewatchers Mobile Camps are sited in private conservancies with a wealth of wildlife and where you can go on walks with Maasai guides and take night drives but they are also conveniently located for easy access to Amboseli National Park and the Maasai Mara Reserve.
-
Drive from Nairobi to Selenkay Conservancy (102 miles, 4 hours), stopping en route to buy your choice of drinks for the next 3 days and arriving for a late lunch at camp. All meals and mineral water are provided in camp. Take a rest after lunch and then go out on an afternoon game drive to explore the Selenkay Conservancy. All the big cats have been seen in the Conservancy as well as elephants and a wide range of species including large numbers of giraffes, zebra, and antelopes. There are also less common animals to be seen such as the long-necked gerenuk gazelle, lesser kudu and African wildcat. Dinner and overnight in the camp at Selenkay.
-
After an early breakfast spend the morning on a game drive in the Selenkay Conservancy and an escorted nature walk with Maasai guides, returning to camp for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit a nearby Maasai Village where you will get to known more about the way of life of a Masai before enjoying a night game drive with a spotlight to seek out the nocturnal animals as you head back to camp in the dark. Upon arrival at the airstrip in the Mara you will be transferred to the Gamewatchers Mobile Camp in Ol Kinyei Conservancy and shown to your tent, before heading out on an evening game drive in the conservancy to see some of the wildlife for which the Mara is famous. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
-
Wake up at dawn and enjoy an early game drive in the conservancy on the look out for the big cats, returning to camp for a late breakfast followed by an escorted nature walk and then lunch. In the afternoon enjoy another gamedrive in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy with a night drive as you head back to camp driving in the dark with a spotlight for the chance to see the nocturnal animals. Dinner and overnight at camp in Ol Kinyei.
-
An early breakfast followed by a full day of game viewing in the Mara Reserve, taking a picnic lunch. Return to the camp in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight.
-
A final short early morning game drive in the conservancy followed by breakfast and then leave camp for the 4 hour drive back to Nairobi.

Tanzania "Authentic" Mobile Camping Safari 7 days
-
After an early breakfast, we will meet at the ARUSHA HOTEL in the centre of Arusha at 08h00 for a short briefing, and depart for Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara National Park. The safari crew will have gone ahead to set up camp. The drive to Tarangire is just over two hours and you will be able to enjoy a full day there game viewing. The Tarangire ecosystem is the third largest in Tanzania (20 000 square kilometres), of which the park occupies a mere thirteen per cent. During the dry season, the park has the second largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania. The unique acacia and baobab vegetation provides a home for over five hundred and fifty bird species, as well as lion, leopard, buffalo and large herds of elephant; also species such as gerenuk, oryx and eland, rarely seen in the other parks in the North. Note: At certain times of the year we recommend Lake Manyara in place of Tarangire (November - April).
-
After a morning game drive in either Manyara or Tarangire, we will stop for a picnic lunch in the park, and then take a leisurely drive up through the bustling town of Karatu and into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Opportunity to stop for curios Mto-wa-Mbu en route up the escarpment, or at Karatu there is a good t-shirt shop! Arrive mid afternoon at our private campsite. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the natural wonders of the world. A large volcanic caldera, with an area of 259 square kilometres, it contains a huge variety of game and birds and is often referred to as a microcosm of Africa with its dramatic weather changes and varied terrains consisting of forest, grasslands and both freshwater and soda lakes. We will descend steadily down the steep 610 metre sides of the crater from our campsite perched on the crater rim. A days game viewing in the crater is almost guaranteed to turn up four of the Big Five, as well as zebra, gazelle, warthog and a rich variety of birds, all viewed against the backdrop of the thickly forested crater walls.
-
A full day in the crater with a picnic lunch, or you may hire a local Masai guide and go for a game walk, or visit the local village during the afternoon. Discuss the options with your guide who will assist you with arrangements.
-
We drive from Ngorongoro Crater to Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge where in 1959 Mary Leakey made her groundbreaking discovery of a hominid (human-like) skull dating back 1.8 million years. Since then other hominid species, possibly our early ancestors, have been found in the area dating as far back as 3.7 million years. The whole area is often referred to as the "cradle of mankind". From here we make our way through to the great plains of the Serengeti beyond. Depending on the number of animals and magnificent bird life we stop to observe more closely along the way, we should reach camp by late afternoon
-
Two full days excursion through the Serengeti plains, during which our guide will make every effort to locate the migration if it is at all possible - this will depend on your dates of travel. If not, you won't be disappointed with a veritable feast of other fascinating wildlife to observe in this central Serengeti zone. The Serengeti is unequalled for its beauty and contains more than three million large mammals spread over the vast endless plains. It is here, at certain times of the year, that we may encounter the breathtaking spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, where one and a quarter million wildebeest trek in columns of up to forty kilometres long in search of grazing, drawing with them their predators and numerous other species of game. From January to March the herds can largely be found in the southern area, proceeding north through the Western Corridor during June and July before entering Kenya's Masai Mara. They return south in November to repeat this amazing instinctive procession all over again.
-
We recommend that you take the option of flying back from the Serengeti to Arusha today - it is a scenic flight over the highlands of Ngorongoro and the Rift Valley area, dropping down to Arusha - on a clear day you will see fantastic views of Mount Meru hovering close by. This is an additional cost. Alternatively, you may drive back to Arusha, arriving late afternoon (picnic lunch would be included). There will be a little time to shop for curios, either on the road back, or just outside the town centre.
-
This safari departs from Arusha on Saturday mornings.

-
Half an hours drive from Nairobi and we are already in the midst of Africa as it was known by Hemingway. This excellent tarmac road lined with acacias and termite mounds brings us quickly to the Namanga border post. The sacred mountain Oldonyo Orok dominates Namanga. There lies the grave of one of the most important Laibon or Masai sorcerers. It is not however the religious aspect that attracts people to this busy town but the trading opportunities offered by the border post. Whilst carrying out the formalities to enter Tanzania we will have proposals to purchase a wide variety of contraband goods. Once we have crossed into Tanzania we penetrate the heart of the greatest geological feature of this continent. The Rift Valley is 8000 km long and runs from the Dead Sea to Madagascar. The difference in altitude between the valley floor and the high plateau forming its escarpment creates dramatically contrasting climates. The valley floor receives very little rain and is the territory of the Nilotic Masai herdsmen. Up on the high plateau the higher precipitation levels allow the agriculturist Bantu to develop large plantations of coffee and tea. Late afternoon we arrive at Karatu in the Ngorongoro highlands and pass the night in a lodge.
-
Half day game-drive in the crater. Ngorongoro Conservation Area was created with a separate entity from the Serengeti to protect the Masai herdsmen. The Masai had in fact found themselves thrown out of their traditional pasturelands. It was decided that to protect the ancestral rights of the Masai they should be given the right to graze their cattle in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area but not in the Serengeti. This compromise seems to be a success as we are able to observe an enormous variety of wildlife against the backdrop of some spectacular landscapes. The amateur photographer will appreciate the contrast of the cloudy skies and the brilliant golden sunlight illuminating the vegetation on the crater floor, and the white soda lake where pink flamingos search for food. Night spent in Lodge on crater rim.
-
Ngorongoro Conservation Area is not only an animal reserve but also a very important location for research into the roots of mankind. At Olduvai and Laetoli, Louis Leakey discovered several Australopithecus as well as footprints that date back 3.5 million years. We visit the museum at Olduvai Gorge, before entering the Serengeti ecosystem with endless plains of game. Camping inside the park. Full day game driving in one of the most famous areas of the Serengeti, Seronera at the heart of the Serengeti. Camping inside the park. Full day game driving in the Lobo area, the northern section of the Serengeti which borders the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. Elephants, lions, and plains animals are plentiful. At certain times of the year, when the game moves away from this area, this day could be spent in Seronera. Camping inside the park.
-
Morning game drive before crossing into Masai country. The Gol Mountains form the escarpment of the western wall of the Rift Valley. This higher altitude makes it a greener area where Masai herdsmen concentrate with their animals. It will be also the starting point of our trek. Camping.
-
The Masai are of Nilotic origin and once these warriors frightened even the bravest explorers, but today they live a peaceful existence principally caring for their enormous herds of cattle. We meet them grazing their herds and perched on the top of the highest granite rock they can keep guard over the plains for any lion or other possible threat to their cattle. Accompanied by our Masai guides, with lunch and water for the day’s journey, we set off to cross this small chain of mountains. The large valleys that cut through the mountains are gathering points for wildlife in search of water and grazing. Even the large predators are attracted during February and March when the young wildebeest are born. The peaceful cohabitation between the Masai and this wildlife is spectacular, and it’s not unusual to find herds of zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and cattle grazing together. Passing Masai villages we frequently meet with the warrior herdsmen. A river has cut a deep gorge in the escarpment wall and in some places we walk in narrow canyons of basalt barely a few meters wide and towering a hundred meters above our heads. The river at this stage flows permanently and occasionally we have to walk waist deep in the clear water. It’s a refreshing and cool moment we enjoy to its fullest, knowing that quite soon we will reach one of the hottest places in Tanzania. Later strolling easily on the high plateau we appreciate the rock formations and views of the surrounding mountains. Our vehicles meet us in the evening to set up camp. Camping.
-
We follow an important track used by the Masai from Lake Natron during the dry season when they herd their cattle up onto the highlands for grazing. In turn the Masai from the highlands herd their cattle down onto the salt plains of Natron. Descending the escarpment towards Lake Natron, the path is rough and the vegetation changes rapidly. Incessant meetings with the Masai slows our progression, as we must make way for their herds of goats and cattle to pass on this steep and rocky pathway. Even for the Masai of Natron the environment is inhospitable and tough. Deep down on the floor of the Rift Valley, the giant fault that cuts its way across the African continent, the world continues to evolve. Several other volcanoes rise from the plains and Gelai dominates at some 3000 metres over Lake Natron. This lake was discovered by English geologist named Gregory and is certainly the most spectacular in the Rift Valley. An enormous pan of pink soda stretches for over 30 kilometres. All around the edge of the lake there is hot salty water bubbling from the ground at temperatures exceeding 50° C. These springs produce a microscopic aquatic life that feeds a variety of local bird species, along with a number of migratory birds. A species of perch, "Tilapia Grahami" manages to survive in these extreme conditions, breeding in puddles of fresh water. Areas More...ncentrated in soda are favourable for the reproduction of algae that flamingos feed upon. It's not unusual for the flamingos to number into the hundreds of thousands. Camping.
-
The active volcano Ol Donyo Lengai is the sacred mountain of the Masai. Lengai means God in Maa language and on the summit, protected from the vapour and heat of the volcano, resides 'Ngai'. We start our climb at 1am to the summit of Lengai at 2800 metres above sea level. The climb is a steep one that we attempt in the moonlight, so that we'll reach the summit in time to watch the sun rise on Kilimanjaro 200 km away. From the jagged crater rim we have a spectacular view over Natron and the surrounding volcanoes and escarpment. We follow our guide carefully down into the caldera where the volcano is active and lava flows regularly from small eruptive cones. We make a weary descent back to our vehicles and after some brunch to regain our energy head cross the Rift Valley towards Longido. Lengai is one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the area, not because of the technical difficulty but due to the steepness, hot climate and loose volcanic gravel.
-
After the dusty track of Longido we meet a good tarmac road that takes us to Namanga and the border post once again. Once the formalities to cross the border are completed we head to Nairobi. After a last glance over Hemmingway's Africa we find ourselves once again amongst the hustle and bustle of city life. After saying our farewells to the group with whom we have shared so many memorable experiences you will be dropped at your hotel.

Tanzania "Adventure style" Camping Safari 6 days

Your driver will come to greet you at your Arusha hotel at 07h30. depart Arusha around 10h00 and make our way directly to Manyara National Park where we will stop for lunch at a pleasant picnic area inside the park before embarking on an afternoon game-drive. We depart from Manyara at around 16h00 and wind our way upwards into the densely forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing to admire the splendid view of the crater floor 600m below at Heroes Point, before driving on to our campsite on the rim of the Ngorongoro caldera where we will overnight after a hearty bush dinner under the stars.
-
Today we break camp and embark on a game drive into the great Serengeti plains. Before crossing from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area into the Serengeti National Park we should take the opportunity to visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum where we may attend a short talk on the archaeological importance of Olduvai and the work of Mary and Louis Leakey in excavating the area and discovering some of Africa’s most important hominid fossils. An optional extra this morning, on our way to Olduvai, would be the chance to visit a Maasai village boma and spend some time learning about the culture, traditions and beliefs of this ancient, noble warrior tribe. This is at an additional cost, and should be discussed with the guide, and paid directly to the guide

Morning and afternoon game-drives in the central Seronera zone of Serengeti National Park. Africa's most famous game reserve covers an area of almost 15,000km2 and is world-renowned for its dense predator population and the annual wildebeest migration. The greater part of the park is open grassland, patches of acacia woodland and isolated areas of granite rock outcrops called koppies. Animal migration is linked to the annual rainfall patterns and its effect on their feeding habitats. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be found here along with smaller concentrations of Thomson gazelle, Grant's gazelle, impala, kongoni, Kirk's dik dik, klipspringer and small numbers of roan, oryx, oribi, eland and waterbuck. There are also significant numbers of buffalo, giraffe and warthog. Elephants are relatively scarce on the open plains, more common in the northern areas and the western corridor. The few remaining black rhinos are restricted to an inaccessible part of the park. But the most popular animals to be found here in greater abundance than elsewhere on the northern circuit are the cats. Lions, cheetahs and leopard may all be seen here along with other predators, such as the spotted hyena, golden and black-backed jackals, wild cats and servals.
-
An early morning game drive in the Serengeti before departing back towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Then, late afternoon, we return to the Lake Manyara area near to the bustling little town of Mto wa Mbu (pronounced as one word mtowambu) for our last night of safari. After many hot and dusty days of travel encountering quite basic facilities within the parks, here we find hot showers and cold drinks in abundance for our last night on safari. There may be cultural entertainment such as tribal dancing or acrobats at the campsite or neighbouring establishments should you wish to attend.
-
After our (optional) morning walk we break camp and head back to Arusha, arriving around lunchtime. Alternatively you may like to take a look around the curio shops and souvenir alleys of Arusha before your guide bids you farewell at your hotel or lodge.
-
This safari departs from Arusha alternate Sunday mornings.

Here the Ewaso Nyiro River supports a wide variety of game among them elephant, buffalo, cheetah leopard, lion, grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, oryx and the long necked gerenuk. Accommodation in our semi-permanent campsite beautifully set on the edge of the river under a canopy of trees, or pitch tents nearby.

Early in the morning we head south via Lake Bogoria, which is a shallow soda lake with a beautiful scenery and also home to a sizeable number of flamingos and other species of birds. After lunch, we proceed to Lake Nakuru in the south - another shallow soda lake that has been described as an ornithologists paradise and one of the world's most magnificent sights. Here one has an opportunity to see up to two million flamingos besides tens of thousands of other birds if lucky.
